Dental work like crowns and bridge restorations are typically cemented into your mouth with a strong dental adhesive. This bonds them to the anchoring abutments with the same strength and integrity that you experienced from the natural tooth. Yet there are still times when poor oral hygiene problems or a recent dental trauma can loosen this connection.

If you are in the Bolingbrook, Naperville, Riverside, Joliet, Illinois area and you experience any looseness in a piece of bridgework or a crown, please do not delay in calling 630-972-4010 to have it examined at the dental office of Shining Smiles LLC.

While you’re waiting for your appointment, there are a few things you can do to minimize your chances of further problems.

— You need to refrain from wiggling or playing with the loosened dental work. Even a little bit of motion has the potential to damage an abutment, calling for more invasive treatment methods.

— If some form of dental trauma has left debris in your mouth or the blood from traumatized tissues is obscuring your view, you can gently rinse it away with lukewarm salt water. Beyond that, you should not try to brush, floss, or attempt to clean the compromised dental work. Any other necessary cleaning procedures should be left to our professionally-trained staff.

— So long as the abutment is uncompromised we might be able to cement the crown or bridge back in place or fit you for a new piece of dental work. If an abutment has been damaged, we might need to perform a root canal. This will restore enough structure to secure a new bridge into place.
